I have set this as a homework task or a seminar task for my A Level students, however it can work with any age group really. It is also really good for those students who need to build up to whole class or bigger group presentations. To explain this activity I am going to use the example of Green Crime case studies as this is a topic where I have used this activity. After having a lecture on Green Crime A Level Sociology I set the students a homework task of finding out about a green crime Case study. I decided which case study each student would look at differentiation and they were given very strict perimeters for their presentations and what it must include:. In the presentation lesson the students speed date their presentations.
First Day Activities: Speed Dating
One of my favorite parts of leading a school is providing meaningful Professional Development for teachers. I have worked at a BASIS Curriculum School for roughly 13 years now and have had many different opportunities to provide training for teachers. This began when I held the Dean of Students position and was able to create resources that allowed our teachers and fellow administrators to better support our students and has evolved over the years. Now, as the Head of School, I work with our Senior Director to look at the needs of our learning community and provide opportunities before school as a part of in-service training and during the school year in our staff meetings that allow our teachers to develop skills and perfect their craft of teaching.
One of the things that I enjoy the most is giving our teachers an opportunity to lead training sessions as well, or collaborate in a way that allows them to share their passions with one another.

Oh, this lesson is awesome! Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read. They really enjoyed the lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too.
The best part? The classes I did this with were excellent at reading quietly, even though many of them are struggling readers! Prep : Decide how you want the tables set up. I had 9 tables with 4 chairs at each table. Each table was a different genre. For the reading resource classes, I chose high-interest genres such as horror, humor, manga, nonfiction, survival, romance, sports, and realistic fiction.
I put books on each table to represent that genre. Each table had a sign labeling the genre. I also set up a PowerPoint with the directions for the minutes.
I know this is a rare feat, especially in the secondary setting, but I am not exaggerating. Speed dating is the real deal. It tricks students into learning and will make your teacher heart warm and fuzzy inside. The best part is that this lesson model is so versatile that you can find a creative way to use it for just about anything!

Speed Dating is a dynamic discussion strategy that supports students to analyze texts and respond to the ideas of others. To set up an initial Speed Dating exercise during class, teachers should prepare a series of questions related to an individual text or text set. Students can later be coached into writing their own questions based on the reading.
Teachers should distribute one question to each student and allow the students time to answer the question in writing. The room should be structured as a typical “Speed Dating” venue, with two rows of desks or tables facing each other, and each student facing another student. Each student shares his or her question with the classmate sitting across from him or her, and then the classmate responds to the question.
This activity fosters student engagement and builds students’ discussion skills. Speed Dating is a very valuable strategy for English Language Learners, as it allows for rehearsed oral practice and conversational skills. It also embeds social skills into the classroom, with students practicing active listening and accountable talk with their partners.

The main objective is to get students speaking and assess their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, as well as giving them an idea of what is expected of them for the rest of the year. Single men and women attend an event, usually in a bar or a club.
During the event, they will have the opportunity to meet a series of potential partners. As the term speed-dating suggests, they only have three minutes to impress each person before rotating to the next. In the classroom we do the same but eliminate the romantic part!

After 3 days of learning about the bureaucracy, our last day I wanted to assess student understanding in a way that was not a multiple choice test. The overall goal here was not to memorize each agency. I wanted an overall view of how the bureaucracy interacted with our every day lives. I made that clear to them because understanding the goals of the assignment are necessary for optimal student success.
I also allowed them extra point if they 1. The dress up was an idea of one of the students and I loved it! The rule was, you cannot interrupt. You just need to listen. At the start of a speed dating session, students are given a topic or question to discuss. Each student sits facing another student. Students typically remain in their partner-groups for about minutes before the instructor, who must keep time, notifies them to move on to their next partner. Once students rotate to their new partners, the timer is reset and students again discuss their topic or question, this time with a new discussion partner.
The session proceeds in this manner, with each student thus getting the opportunity to interact with multiple other students in a series of brief one-on-one discussions Murphy, Depending on the goals of the session, the instructor may prepare just a few broad questions for students to discuss Murphy, Rather than preparing the answer sheets themselves, instructors can assign their preparation as a homework or in-class activity, as creating the answer sheets serves as another opportunity for students to learn the material Danczak, Another pre-session preparatory activity is to provide students with time to write on the topic to organize their ideas before they begin to converse with their peers Murphy, In other variations, students may be required to take a stand on a topic, or they may be asked to incorporate points made by other students into their position as the session goes along Murphy, Conversely, speed dating sessions prevent dominant students from monopolizing class discussion time Murphy, Because each conversation is quick, speed dating provides a way to cover a lot of information potentially about disparate topics in a relatively short period of time Lashbrook, By participating in speed dating sessions, students gain practice thinking under time pressure.
Due to the repetitive nature of the interactions, students may become expert in a particular content area by the end of the session Lashbrook,
